Partner and recruitment expert Henrik Andersson has worked in recruitment for over fifteen years. He explains that the job application process consists of four steps. It starts with mapping out the job market. You should find a job that matches your interests and qualifications. The next step is to draft a job application and apply for the position. The job application and CV are crucial for whether you progress to the next step, an interview. Tailor both your application and CV to the job you are applying for and highlight what you can contribute to the role you are seeking. When you reach the interview stage, it is important to be prepared, to know which positive attributes you should highlight and which part of your competence you should emphasise. Finally, there is the interview itself – then it is about performing as well as possible, without letting nerves get the better of you.
Here are Andersson's top tips for the job application process.
- Be prepared for the interview
You don't need to read the entire annual report, but read the entire job advert, information about the company, and the people you will meet. Know who you will be greeting in the job interview. - Stay up to date and be relevant.
Calibrate your market value regularly. Be active on LinkedIn and keep your profile up to date. Attend relevant professional events, and ensure your skills remain current. - Build networks and nurture relationships.
Invest in continuous network maintenance. Invest in the people around you. Nobody wants a friend who only extends a hand when they need something. If you're rejected at an interview, call and ask why. If you have a humble approach to the process and a desire to learn, you'll make a much better impression than if you get irritated because the process isn't going your way. - Be humble, and think long-term.
Lose and win with the same mindset. It's okay to be frustrated when the job isn't yours, but quickly move past the defeat and look forward. Learn from your losses so you can perfect yourself for the next round. Nobody wants to hire a sore loser.
