The Norwegian Media Authority is the state's specialist and supervisory body in the media field, and shall contribute to fulfilling the societal objectives of freedom of expression, legal certainty, and a vibrant democracy. The Norwegian Media Authority shall promote media diversity and critical media literacy in the population, and aims to be a leading centre of expertise in its specialist areas.

Medietilsynet is based in Fredrikstad and has around 40 full-time employees.
